How to Make the Best Classic Margarita
There’s nothing quite like a perfectly balanced margarita on a warm afternoon. This classic margarita recipe strips away the pre-made mixes and artificial flavors, leaving you with a sophisticated cocktail that celebrates the quality of its simple ingredients: premium tequila, fresh lime juice, and a touch of orange liqueur.
Why Fresh Ingredients Matter
The secret to an exceptional margarita lies in using only the finest ingredients. Fresh lime juice makes an enormous difference compared to bottled alternatives—the bright, zesty flavor is unmistakable. Pairing it with a quality reposado tequila and real orange liqueur like Grand Marnier or Cointreau creates a drink that’s smooth, balanced, and infinitely more satisfying than anything from a bottled mix.
Perfectly Balanced Every Time
The 2:1:1:1 ratio of tequila to lime juice to orange liqueur to simple syrup has been perfected over decades. This classic proportion ensures the drink is neither too sweet nor too sour, with the spirit shining through. Whether you prefer a salted rim or a simple lime wheel garnish, this timeless cocktail is sure to impress at your next gathering or happy hour.

Preparation
- If you'd like a salted rim, spread sea salt on a small plate. Run the lime slice around the rim of a glass to moisten and swirl the rim of the glass in the salt. Set aside.
Assembly
- Pour tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add a handful of ice.
- Put the top on the shaker and shake vigorously for about 15-30 seconds.
- Strain the shaken margarita into the salt-rimmed glass filled with ice. Garnish with a lime wheel if desired. Enjoy!
Notes
- Use fresh lime juice for the best flavor—bottled juice won't give you the same quality.
- Reposado tequila is aged for 2-12 months, giving it a smoother, more refined taste than silver tequila.
- You can make a batch of simple syrup ahead of time for quick margarita preparation.
