Easy Homemade Tzatziki Sauce

How to Make the Best Easy Homemade Tzatziki Sauce

Tzatziki is one of those magical condiments that transforms simple ingredients into something restaurant-quality in just minutes. This easy homemade tzatziki sauce combines cool Greek yogurt with fresh cucumber and aromatic herbs to create a dip, sauce, or spread that’s perfect for nearly any occasion.

Whether you’re dipping warm pita bread, topping a Mediterranean bowl, or adding a creamy accent to grilled meats, tzatziki delivers a burst of fresh, cool flavors. The key to great tzatziki is removing the excess moisture from the grated cucumber so you get a perfectly thick and creamy consistency without any watery dilution.

This recipe takes just 10 minutes to prepare and the results are far superior to anything you’ll find in a store-bought version. Once you taste the difference that fresh dill, real garlic, and quality Greek yogurt make, you’ll find yourself whipping up a batch again and again.

Tzatziki Sauce

  1. Grate the cucumber on the largest side of a box grater. Peeling the skin from the cucumber is optional. In a clean kitchen towel or on two stacked paper towels, squeeze the excess water from the grated cucumber. Finely chop the mint or dill, or use a combination of the two herbs. Finely grate the garlic.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the yogurt, chopped fresh herbs, garlic, lemon juice, and salt.
  3. To add richness, drizzle or mix extra virgin olive oil into the sauce before serving. Store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 to 5 days.

Notes

  • Peeling the cucumber skin is optional depending on your preference.
