Strawberry Mint Julep

How to Make the Best Strawberry Mint Julep

A strawberry mint julep is the perfect refreshing cocktail for warm weather gatherings and special occasions. This timeless drink combines the smoothness of bourbon with the bright, cooling flavors of fresh mint and sweet strawberries. The muddling technique releases the essential oils from the mint, infusing the cocktail with aromatic complexity while the strawberry adds natural sweetness and a beautiful color.

What makes this version truly special is the balance between the fruit, mint, and spirit. The simple syrup ties everything together, while the crushed ice keeps the drink perfectly chilled without diluting it too quickly. The garnish of fresh mint isn’t just for looks—clapping the mint between your palms before serving releases fragrant oils that elevate the entire drinking experience.

Whether you’re celebrating Derby Day, hosting a garden party, or simply craving a sophisticated spring cocktail, this strawberry mint julep delivers impressive flavor with minimal effort. It’s a crowd-pleaser that tastes like it came from a craft cocktail bar.

Preparation

  1. In a high ball or old fashioned glass, muddle the mint leaves, strawberry and simple syrup until the strawberry is well mashed.
  2. Pour in bourbon. Fill the glass halfway with crushed ice and stir to chill. Add more crushed ice and form a mound on the top of the glass like a snow cone.
  3. Place the mint leaves for garnish in one palm. Clap your other palm on top of the mint leaves to release their oils and fragrance. Stick the sprigs into the mound of ice. If desired, serve with a straw. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use fresh mint for the best flavor and aroma.
  • You can make simple syrup at home by combining equal parts sugar and water, heating until dissolved, then cooling.
